Sandbags

Thank you for being part of our sandbag event in May. We still have sandbags available to our Cottonwood Heights residents at the Public Works Yard (6579 S. 3000 E.) During our hours of operation 7-4pm please call 801-944-7002 to make sure of availability.

-You must show identification with a Cottonwood Heights address to pick up sandbags.

You can also fill sandbags at:

  • Salt Lake County public works sandbag shed (604 W. 6960 S., north of the main office building)
  • Hours are 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. weekdays (call 385-468-6101 to check availability)

Please note:

  • The City can help deliver sandbags for people who are elderly or disabled. Call us at 801-944-7002 or visit us during a sandbagging event and we will add you to our schedule.
  • The City will be pre-deploying pallets of filled sandbags in various City locations to prepare for potential flooding. Do not take these bags. Doing so will slow down the City's response time and could result in flooding and property damage.
  • Commercial contractors cannot pick up sandbags

Spring Runoff

Prepare for potential flooding this spring and summer with the following information from Cottonwood Heights and Salt Lake County Emergency Management.

YOUR SAFETY IS MOST IMPORTANT.

  • Do not enter the creek or attempt to remove debris once the water levels rise
  • Watch young children and pets carefully when they are near water

Before runoff begins:

  • Check stormwater grates near your home and remove any debris.
  • If your property is near Big or Little Cottonwood Creek, monitor debris in the streambed or near stream banks and clear it to help mitigate flooding and property damage.
  • If you live along Deaf Smith Creek, monitor and clear debris.
  • Once debris is removed from the stream, pile it on the street in front of your home and call Public Works at 801-944-7002 to have it removed. The public works can only pick up stream debris, not other household items or yard waste.

Call Public Works at 801-944-7002 or report an issue to report a blocked storm drain grate or if debris is within local roadways or intersections.

If you see areas of overland flooding along rivers, creeks, streams, canals, or areas of channel erosion, call Salt Lake County Flood Control at 385-468-6600. Engage with City resources for local drainage problems before contacting Salt Lake County Flood Control.

FEMA Floodplain

Cottonwood Heights participates in FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The program requires participating communities to enact ordinances that:

  • protect the natural floodplain environment
  • prevent damage to property or protect public safety.

FEMA maintains floodplain delineations on a set of maps called Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM). Mortgage companies are required to determine if a property they are financing is located within the 1% annual chance floodplain (any zone designation beginning with the letter A). If so the mortgage company can require the buyer to obtain flood insurance.

A buyer can complete an "Elevation Certificate" and submit it to FEMA for review and determination if they wish to challenge a Mortgage Company's determination.

FEMA last released new Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) effective September 25, 2009 and several revised maps effective August 2, 2012. These maps are available to view on FEMA's National Flood Hazard Boundary Layer. Anyone may purchase a Flood Insurance Rate Map from FEMA through the “ Map Service Center”. These maps include revisions to Big & Little Cottonwood Creek Flood Zones.

FEMA does not allow government entities to make determinations except as required for government business. Three items are needed to make a determination:

  • Map Number
  • Map Date
  • Zone Designation

FEMA does not allow local governments to make insurance determinations. Please do not ask for a determination from Cottonwood Heights.
