The main functions of the engineering division include:

  • Plan reviews and private development inspections
  • City capital improvement project design and construction
  • Public street system inspection and maintenance
  • Traffic control and traffic safety issues

Master Plans 

Storm Drain Master Plan

Cottonwood Heights updated their Storm Drain Master Plan in 2020. The master plan outlines existing system deficiencies and future projects required to bring the Storm Drain into an acceptable level of service.

Transportation Master Plan

The Transportation Master Plan was updated in 2023. A copy of the Transportation Master Plan can be found here.

The purpose of the Transportation Master Plan is to:

  • Improve Cottonwood Heights transportation planning and implementation, prioritizing efforts based on community identified mobility goals.
  • Identify future projects that will improve pedestrian safety, walkability, and traffic flow.
  • Improve existing active transportation network to promote alternative transportation use.
  • Consolidate various transportation policy documents under one integrated plan.
  • Develop Typical Roadway Cross-Sections for different road classifications.
  • Develop a Transportation Model to anticipate roadway level of service up to 2050.
  • Identify solutions to accommodate future growth, road safety, and road classification.

Engineering Standards

The City has adopted the 2017 Edition of the American Public Works Association (APWA) Standards and Specifications as well as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as the Standards used for all construction within Cottonwood Heights.

The City is currently updating the Engineering Standards to be more comprehensive for new development and improvements on existing infrastructure. Until these are updated, existing standards will be linked below as a resource for working within the City.
