FINANCE DEPARTMENT

Authority / Purpose:

The duty of the finance department is to act to promote, secure, and preserve the financial and property interests of the City; to supervise financial activities; to advise the city manager on fiscal policy; and to make interim and annual financial reports as requested by the city manager and to prepare the annual budget.

Responsibilities:

Cottonwood Heights’ Finance department prepares the annual city budget and annual audited comprehensive annual financial reports (CAFR).  Additionally, a popular annual financial is prepared.  Monthly a current financial report monitors operational revenues and expenditures, compared to current year budget. 

Daily operations include animal licensing, cash receipting, accounts payable, accounts receivables, payroll processing, revenue analysis and internal operational reviews as requested.

 Awards and Recognitions:

The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Cottonwood Heights for each comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) submitted to the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).  The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award has been awarded to the City of Cottonwood Heights for each Annual Operating & Capital Budget submitted to the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).  In order to receive this award, a government unit must publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, as an operations guide, as a financial plan, and as a communications device.

The Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Cottonwood Heights for each popular “Financial Report to the City” starting with the fiscal year 2012 report. This award is a prestigious national award recognizing conformance with the highest standards for preparation of state and local government popular reports.
