Construction crews will begin installation of a new crosswalk signal on Fort Union Boulevard near Mountview Park.
The overhead flashing beacon will have push buttons on each side of Fort Union Boulevard, enabling pedestrians to alert traffic prior to crossing the roadway.
The beacons will consist of one flashing yellow light above each travel lane and a crosswalk warning sign arranged on an overhead signal arm. The beacons will only be activated when a pedestrian pushes the button.
The purpose of the signal is to alert drivers that pedestrians are intending to cross the roadway and that the pedestrians have the right of way. Vehicles will be required to yield the right of way to pedestrians entering the crosswalk.
The signal will be installed at this location to enable safe crossing for pedestrians, while maintaining proper left hand turns into the Boulder Hollow Apartments and Mountain View Park.
The signal is not a stoplight, but a yielding operation that allows safe passage for pedestrian, while maintaining traffic flow on one of Cottonwood Heights’ busiest streets.
The project will not require any extended lane closures during construction, but could cause short delays as the large, metal arms are installed over the roadway.
The project will begin on Oct. 27 and should be finished before Thanksgiving, depending on optimal weather for road painting.
