City Fireworks Statement 7-7-17

City Fireworks Statement 7-7-17
Posted on 07/07/2017

In the wake of several recent wildland fires, some citizens have asked for a ban on fireworks in Cottonwood Heights. Please be aware that State Law (specifically Utah Code Annotated 53-7-202 thru 225) limits the laws that a city can enact to restrict or ban fireworks. We are working with our legal staff and fire officials to ensure that our laws provide as much protection as possible.

In the meantime, we are asking for your help to ensure that citizens use legal fireworks in the correct way. Firework restrictions and an interactive map are available on the Unified Fire Authority website www.unifiedfire.org and City website www.cottonwoodheights.utah.gov. Please note that while there are specific areas in the city that completely ban fireworks, the entire city is banned for aerial fireworks within 300 feet and ground-based fireworks within 50 feet of vacant lots and undeveloped land. The fires caused on July 4th were due to violations of this provision.

We ask for your help in protecting our community by using legal fireworks only as permitted and reporting illegal use. You can call 801-840-4000 to report illegal activity and 911 for emergencies. We will hold individuals responsible for violating these laws and appreciate your cooperation in making Cottonwood Heights a safe place to live, work and play.
