Be a Good Neighbor. Be a Good Pet Owner.
Birds singing, tulips blooming and raindrops falling…. all of these things remind us that spring has sprung. Unfortunately, spring at Animal Services is not always a happy time, due to a seasonal increase in animal issues. Overpopulation, dog bites and stray animals running loose all tend to increase during the spring months. So, if pets are part of your family, now is an excellent time to make a concerted effort to be a good neighbor and a good pet owner.
Dog Issues
Off leash areas: Many dog owners enjoy exercising their dogs off leash. However, not everyone welcomes a dog approaching them, their children or their leashed dog. You can get a ticket if your dog is off leash in a city park, neighborhood or anywhere out of your fenced yard.
Other ways to be a good neighbor and responsible dog owner:
- Clean up after your dog. Nobody likes to step over or in poop!
- Spay or neuter your dogs. They are more likely to stay home, less likely to bite and healthier in general.
- License your dog. A license is your dog’s ticket home if he should be lost. Licensing all dogs, cats and ferrets is required per the Cottonwood Heights City ordinances. Call 944-7095 for information about licensing.
Cat Issues
Too many cats: Animal Services always faces a large influx of cats during the spring months. Many cats come from the Cottonwood Heights area. If your cat comes up missing, it is very important that you come to Animal Services immediately. Also, make sure your cat wears a license and current identification tag at all times! You can also have a microchip implanted by your veterinarian. For a very reasonable fee, microchips provide permanent identification of your pet. Collars, tags and microchips are truly lifesavers for lost cats. It is Mandentory to license your Cat!!
Other ways to be a good neighbor and responsible cat owner:
§ Spay and neuter!!!! We can’t stress the importance of this enough. Spring is “kitten season,” and there are simply too many kittens to find homes for them all. Don’t add to this tragedy, spay and neuter your cats. There is simply no good reason not to.
§ Keep your cats indoors. Cats allowed to roam outside get lost, injured, sick and can become a neighborhood nuisance. A cat’s life expectancy more than doubles when kept indoors. And remember, it is illegal to allow your cat to wander. Cats are under the same restrictions as dogs – they must be in a fenced yard or under your control at all times.
§ License your cat. A license increases your cat’s chances of going home by almost 100%.
